"My family and I enjoy digging for it on Sundays."
An excellent read, in my opinion
An Atheist Manifesto

The believers amongst you may wish to pass this up as it may angry the blood.

Aren't Friday's afternoons at work grand?

This article reminds me of why I don't call myself an atheist - atheism is as much a religion as Christianity (or any other belief), and its followers can be just as narrow-minded and bigoted. In this case, especially, it's striking how little he actually knows and understands about the very religions he rejects.

If you really want to get into an argument with me some time, bring this up!

The argument, to me, did not seem to require knowledge of Christianity or any other religion--unless you have some knowledge that I do not that demonstrates the existence of God? While there may have been information that was inaccurate or misleading in the article, it was extraneous. (Hmm, a bit convenient, I think). Perhaps you could point out an example?

One of the things I found interesting or poignant in the article was that atheist, as a word, need not really exist. We don't have special words for those people that don't believe in Santa Claus or the Eater Bunny or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which have a similar level of "proof," yet may have their believers. To me, "agnostic" (being an alternative to "atheist") is a cop-out with respect to the argument. "I can't disprove the Flying Spaghetti Monster, so I'll just claim it to be unknowable." Lots of things are unknowable.

Ahh, argument has a bad connotation. I look forward to a discussion on the topic. :-)

I take agnostic to mean that there is a belief of some higher power, but that we as humans are not capable of knowing the nature of that power. Granted, that's very simliar to what you wrote in some ways, but there is a difference. There's an implication that the belief exists, but that it cannot be defined by existing religions or even the framework of religion. It's also a nice simple way of saying, "I don't agree with any of these religions and I'm not an athiest" because marking oneself as an athiest implies a complete denial of the possibility of a higher power or a purpose for existance.
